Reflections of the Soul: Why Your Emotions Don’t Have to Break You
The Reflection and the Source
We often mistake the tumultuous emotions of our inner lives for our entire reality. When sadness or anxiety ripples through us, it feels as though our very foundation is fractured. But the Zen master Dōgen offers a profound corrective in this quote: “Enlightenment is like the moon reflected on the water.”
He reminds us that the image of the moon—the awareness or stillness we seek—isn’t damaged by the waves it sits upon. Nor is the water (the container of our experiences) broken by the light that shines within it.
For the introvert navigating a heavy season, this distinction is vital. Your core self is the source (the moon). The difficult feelings you experience are the reflection (the water). This image teaches that your deepest stillness remains intact, untouched by the shifting reflections of your current mood. You can hold immense light, and immense depth, without being broken by either.
